After posting a simple Facebook appeal for help, born out of sheer frustration from seeing refugees stuck at various stations around Hungary, I was overwhelmed with offers from people wanting to help. The Facebook group “Action from Switzerland” was created simply as a main communication channel to disseminate information about where people could donate items.
Thanks to the kindness and generosity of many, I was able to collect essential items and left with an amazing team for Hungary, where we worked alongside NGOs and many other volunteers from all over Europe in Röszke (on the Hungarian and Serbian border).
We worked with one objective in mind: to ensure our donations were distributed in a coordinated manner and to provide effective manpower onsite. After the intense experience, I returned to Zürich and realised what we had done was but a drop in the bucket.
The trip lit a fire in my belly. I wanted to provide continual support for the refugees; support with kindness, dignity and humanity for their long journey towards a safe haven.
I have been incredibly blessed with a strong team of likeminded people from various nationalities and cultures who share the same vision, and we are aided by our network of contacts from various European countries that consist of private individuals and NGOs.
We look forward to working in solidarity with anyone who is willing to contribute to our cause. — Gabrielle Tan-Tay, Founder
